Class Discussions

Today in class we discussed how countries have developed economically and how their health has improved throughout centuries. It was crazy to see how every country started in the same place but eventually some went above and beyond and other barely changed. We also got into a very interesting discussion about the power North Korea has and why they want to launch missels at the U.S. Lastly, we discussed weather or not wealthier people should be taxed more so poor people can have better living standards. I personally think this should never ever happen because some people work extremely hard for their money and their place while others could have slacked their whole lives, not caring about anything because they knew they would get money either way.

Demographic Transition

Countries go through faces of development Start as pre-industrial society Pre-industrial-industrial-post industrial people move where more job opportunities are Birth rates are low because women are becoming professional, there is easy access to birth control and it's not economically beneficial to have a lot of children Hans Rosling: Teaches global health

Going over the Test

In class today we got our tests back, I got an A, and so did everyone except for one person. Our class is incredibly smart, our average was a 98! We also got a chance to do some extra credit, I did the paragraph but i'm really upset I couldn't get to do the donation because my parents haven't been home! It was really interesting to see this new way of helping other people, and it makes me so happy to see how so many of this people get all of the money they ask for. I enjoyed learning about this organization and I hope it continues to thrive!

Kiva.org Extra Credit!!

The Kiva organization is an international nonprofit organization, founded in 2005.  The goal of this organization is to have a world where all people hold the power to create opportunity for themselves and others and t o connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. The methods that are used to achieve their goals are by  having people lend as little as $25, they can help a borrower start or grow a business, go to school, access clean energy or realize their potential. These loans are very effective and efficient.   On Kiva, there have been 2.6 million borrowers in over 84 countries. There have been 1.7 million lenders and $1.07 billion dollars on loans funded through Kiva. With a 97.0% repayment rate. Kiva has helped a lot of people all over the world and this gives the organization it's positive reviews and good reputation.  With people such as Oprah saying things like, “Kiva is a simple concept that can change a person’s life.” You can tell this Organization is good at d

Kiva Talk

Today in class we learned about the Kiva organization and what they do. What this organization does is, you loan money to a certain person to help them out with things such as getting food, a better home or to launch an organization or company. When giving them money, the person has a certain amount of time to re pay it back to you. It all works wonderfully and they have a 97% loan pay back rate. I'm exited to research and hopefully loan some money to someone in need.

Test Day

In class we took our Test. I think I did pretty good, I knew all of the material and it was a pretty basic test. I'm glad this test is over with based on the fact that I have so many tests and quizes on Monday and Tuesday. I'm exited to see what w're going to be learning next in Human Geo!!

Group Project Presentation

In class today, our group presented about the two country comparison and the ranking of hunger organizations. I feel like we did a pretty good job elaborating on our points and sharing our opinions. We also watched another group present and it's interesting to see how we all have the same project but did it on very different things. Also, I got my braces of today!!!!!! So that's super exiting!

Charity Donations

In class today, we had an interesting discussion about how much money donated to charities actually goes to the people in need. It's crazy to think that some charities get millions of dollars donated into them and some of the money might be used incorrectly. Most of the charities we looked at did a good job helping and giving to the poor. Other than this, we just looked at some other presentations and some people re-took the pop quiz.

Re-taking the quiz

After Mr. Schik realized we all did poorly on our pop quiz, he let us retake it, i'm . really glad this happened and I really hope my grade raises. After re-taking the quiz, some people presented their group projects, they were all really detailed and informative. Everyone that went did a great job!

Population Pyramids pt.2

There are three different types of population pyramids, the Christmas tree, the box and the cup. Christmas Tree: growth rates are slow high birth rate short life expectancy Box: low infant mortality slow population growth long life expextancy Cup: low birth rate shrinking population long life expectancy

Population Pyramids

After cutting the chocolate cake, we reviewed everything we've learned on the previous slides. This all lead up to population pyramids. We use population pyramids to analyze growth (or decline) of fertility, mortality and migration in cities. It was crazy to see how generations affect the amount of people per age group. When we looked at the pyramids, we can tell in which years the baby boomer took place because of how much higher the population was in that age group. It's also crazy to see how 80 or more year old females occupy double the amount of the country than 80 year old men do.

Total Fertility Rate

TFR: average number og children born per woman for a population to remain the same, the TFR must be 2.1 higher than 2.1: the population rises lower than 2.1: the population falls World TFR: 2.42 U.S TFR: 2.01 Nigeria TFR: 6.89 Japan TFR: 1.4 US population- 326,625,791 US Infant mortality rate- 5.8 deaths/1,000 live births Highest percentage of catholics?
