A new form of government


  • what cleisthenes did was a huge step forward, getting regular floks involved in governing. But this first democracy had it's limits
  • citizens could participate but only one-fifth of Athenians were citizens
  • after several years, Athens practiced a direct democracy
What democracy looks like:

  • it's where the state/city state is ruled by it's citizens
  • rule is based on citizenship
  • in the agora, citizens argued, made speeches, then voted with white stones

From Local to Global

One of the things we discussed today in class was, at the global scale, encompassing the entire world, geographers tend to see broad patterns. This statement means that a small thing you do in your community can end up affecting the entire world. We discussed the use of solar panels, if everyone started using solar energy a lot of economic and environmental problems would be solved. Global warming would go down and so will the amount of money you have to pay for things such as heaters and power sources. We also discussed the fact that the United States is the third country in the world that produces the most oil and the first country in the world that consumes and imports it. I really didn't know oil was used in so many things, such as power, gas and plastic. It makes me really wonder what would actually happen if it just ran out, everything from plastic production to cars running would be ended. Solar energy can't run out, maybe solar panels are the way to go.

Protest

Today in class, we decided to do a silent protest. It was a joke at first but then we started to realize that sitting in class not hearing about anything can be better than sitting in a class where we question everything that is taught. I love sharing opinions and listening to opinions in this class but it came to the point in which it wasn't an opinion, but statements that made me question why i'm even at school right now, because everything that my teachers are teaching right now could be false. I'm glad we as a class worked in getting this message across, I love the things we learn in here but it has come to the point where it's corrupting my believes.
