Factors that affected the destruction of Houston

Class started with a lot of bickering because of the change of seats, power outage, thirst and bathroom necessities. After all of these complaints, we discussed the factors that made hurricane Harvey as bad as it was. It was the hurricane itself but also the structure of Houston and the fact that they have so much concrete, there was no where for the water to go. This all consists with the situation of the city. We also talked about the positive and negative factors of Manhattan island growing larger because of ships being sunk and trash being thrown at sea, then being covered with landfill. Personally, I think this is positive because of the increase of space and economics.

People in China eat dogs!

Today in human geo, we discussed how different cultures eat different things. Mr.Shik shared that since he's from Chicago, when he moved to Maryland and saw the way people ate crabs, he was astonished. We also discussed how things that are so sacred to us, like dogs, are EATEN in other countries!! I can't imagine this, but it was brought up that in India cows are very sacred so people there can't believe we eat cows. This got me to think that it's crazy how all humans are the same on the inside, but what they eat and do on a daily basis is so different, based on where they live. I wonder if anyone in China has pet dogs.

Reviewing Maps

Today in class, Mr. Shick called everyone up to revise our blogs. After this, we reviewed a region map we did a couple of days before. The maps were labeled with numbers and we had to name the regions. We didn't do much in class today, we reviewed. Today has felt extremely long though, I have a lot of homework and a game, so I won't get home until around 8ish. I hope I can get most of my homework done during my off-mod.

Place and Region

Today in class we discussed our test. After, we discussed how each person has a different view of the zone based on where they live.  Each place on earth is in some respects unique and in other ways similar to other places. The interplay between the uniqueness of each place and the similarities among places lies at the heart of geographic questioning about why things are found where they are. Two basic concepts help geographers to explain why every point on Earth is in some   ways unique- place and region . The difference between the two concepts is partly a matter of scale. A place is a point, whereas a region is an area.

Views of the World

Before I left class early, we talked about how each person has a different view of the world. This made me think how crazy it is that each person is growing up and living their lives in completely different ways based on the country they're living in. A mental map- a person's point of view perception of their area of interaction, most commonly called your activity space.

Free

Today in class, Mr.Shick had to finish grading 50 papers, so instead of doing actual work he let us finish homework and do other things. In this free time I finished 2 worksheets for french, catched up on a show and finished my english reading. I'm really glad I got this time to do homework because now I can go home and relax, i'm really grateful!

Peter's Map

In today's class we discussed how the Peter's map is more accurate than the map we are shown and used to seeing, the mercarian. This gave me such a different view of the world and it was insane. It made me truly understand how just because a continent or country is bigger on the map it gets a lot more importance and recognition. When we flipped the map upside down, every country looked so different in size and shape, but it was still the same map. Continents like Australia, Africa, and South America looked huge but this was just because of how we were looking at it. After Friday's class I got a brand new perspective of the world, it was fascinating.

regions and cultures

Today in class we took some notes, these all included  facts about how even though some countries are right next to each other, they can have a completely different culture. Also, some countries like Russia can have completely different people within, there can be people with completely different cultures living in one country, since it's so big. We also talked about how English is the most popular secondary language spoken in the world, also 82% of homes in the United States speak english. Lastly, we filled out a map labeling the regions of the world. I learned a lot of different regions I didn't think were there such as sub-saharan Africa. Today's class was very interesting.

Test Taking

Today in class, we took or test. It wasn't that hard but I just completely forgot some of my vocabulary. I even confused one of the terms with a term I learned in my bible class. Other than that, I feel like I was prepared and I really hope I did well. Some of the content on the test included, why socrates was sentenced to death, where the meetings took place in ancient Greece (the agora) and other things. The final things in the test were 4 bcr's asking different questions. I'm really hoping I did well on my test.

9-11 discussion

Today in class we discussed 9-11 since today is September 11th. Mr. Shick shared what he was doing at the time it took place, it was interesting to hear what people were doing that exact day. After, we reviewed for our test that we have tomorrow, i'm going to make sure I study everything related with a message to Garcia, such as the vocabulary and how different people interpreted it. I'm also going to make sure I study everything related to the Greeks, Socratis and those definitions.

North-Korea discussion

I had to leave early today so I didn't get notes down. Before leaving we had a class discussion about North Korea's threat to the U.S. Every member of the class gave different judgements and ideas on how to resolve the problem and what the government should do, I personally think the U.S government should create a distraction inside North Korea that will get everyone's attention, this would distract North Korea and make them focus on this problem instead of the U.S.
